The heart IS the centre of the soul, the dwelling place of God, and the focal point of God's redemptive narrative. We are to "love the Lord" our "God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength." The Pharisees, in His day and ours, are excoriated by Jesus for worshipping God in ritual with no corresponding reality: their "hearts are far away from Him."
